WHY DID YOU WANT TO BECOME A BARBER?
I knew in life I would need a skill/trade that would help me as I’ve always wanted to travel the world. When I left education I tried a couple of jobs to see what I would enjoy doing for a living, after a few months in different jobs. I needed a career that I was going to enjoy as I would be doing it for the rest of my life. The one major thing I like about working as a barber is that it’s something different constantly, meeting new people and hearing new stories.
DO YOU HAVE A INSPIRATION IN THE HAIR INDUSTRY?
I do indeed, his name is Johnny The Baba, AKA Johnny Shanahan. I started getting into his work after I followed him on Instagram, I don’t follow a lot of barbers but he really caught my eye. He posts a lot of longer haircuts and with myself just starting to get into the trade you don’t see much length. His fashion is definitely different to others you see in the trade, you will usually see him in bright collars or wearing a crazy hat of some kind, this is why I like him, as he’s original. Johnny is described as a very colourful character who’s very strong minded. The 36 year old barber started off in his hometothwn of limerick, where he would go to the barbers with family members, later in life he started working in barber shops sweeping floors etc. By the age of just 23 he opened and owned his own barber shop, he wanted barbering to be seen as a professional and relaxed environment for gentlemen. He is very opinionated as he believes the barbers should be a “Men’s Only” space, he does claim “there’s nothing wrong with it, I’m not trying to offend anyone by it, but I do stand strong in my belief that a barber shop is no place for a woman” this is why he inspires me as he sets his mind on something and sticks with it not matter what.
WHO IS YOUR CELEBRITY HAIR ICON?
I have an inspiration but they’re not in the hair industry. Current TV shows like Geordie shore and Ex on the beach made me want to provide these styles to other peoples hair, as you see what they look like and I wanted to bring those haircuts. Other icons would be from the football world, such as David Beckham, Neymar and Paul Pogba, that’s down to the haircuts being so out there and different.
Chris brown, Tyga and Drake, simply due to their originality and how they haven’t been pressured to change their musical visions and interpretations due to the ever changing music industry.
Hangover, because of the different actors who are not only skilled in acting but also because they are extremely comical, enjoyable and enticing to watch.
“No matter how you feel, get up, dress up and never give up.” I try to live by this everyday and apply it to situations and days that I find particularly difficult, it pushes me to have a constant positive attitude towards myself and others alike.
Mint, by far, as the clean and aromatic smell is extremely refreshing and makes me feel energised and awakened. Similar strong, yet refreshing smells such as herbs and spices also have a similar, if not the same effect on me.
